The Collection.
A beautifully visualized Apple collection.
How it started.
My Apple collection started in early 2017. While visiting friends in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, we stumbled upon a local thrift store. I always loved visiting this type of store, so obviously we went in to have a look around. In the end, when I was convinced I wasn't going to buy anything, my eyes fell on an old Apple computer. It actually was the retro rainbow-colored logo That first caught my attention. I always had a huge passion for everything everything Apple, but never did research any of their older products. The Apple computers, there were two, were stacked upon each other, and at a first glance I thought there was a computer and separate monitor (it later turned out this was not the case). Excited as I was, I decided to buy the set. The two computers, a Macintosh Classic and a Macintosh LC II cost me €50, which I thought was fair. When I walked out of the thrift store it hit me; I had to travel home with the two computers, using public transport, for over two hours. Oops!
Looking back, I never realized this would be the beginning of my Apple collection. I went in search of a keyboard and mouse to use with the Macintosh Classic (which powered on), and when I finally found one with it came a broken Macintosh SE and an older PowerBook, for free. From that moment, when people realized I liked older Apple products, the donations started pouring in. Mostly iPhones and other iOS devices. I worked in multiple second-hand electronic stores, where I also received a lot of stuff for really good prices, often free. Later on, I started working for Apple retail and an Apple repair center, which I enormously enjoyed. My collection kept growing and with the knowledge I gained from working at the repair center, I was able to repair the products that were entering the collection. My bedroom was becoming too crowded and I decided to rent a high-end storage unit, with temperature controls. The collection grew so fast that I switched units three times until arriving at the one I'm in now.
During my collection journey, I came to meet my amazing girlfriend. She, as a photographer, offered to photograph all the products I had and I enthusiastically agreed. When the photos were ready and edited, I decided to open an Instagram account called; Retr0Apple. I was hesitant at first, but after a short while I realized that the community was amazing! The number of followers grew fast and I met a lot of incredible people, some of which I now call really good friends.
Last year my collection was picked up by the national Dutch Media. I was interviewed by many major newspapers and television programs. The Dutch Apple magazine, iCreate, dedicated four pages to my collection. At that moment I realized I needed to do more with it. The collection is still growing by the day, and someday hopefully, I can find the right place to display it all.
What the future holds for my collection is unknown, but there is one thing certain; I will always do my best to show it off, as proudly as possible!
